ST. LOUIS — The first snow of the season arrived on schedule Saturday, with flakes falling across the St. Louis region by mid-morning.
An earlier prediction of 1 to 2 inches was bumped up by the National Weather Service. Most people will see double that by the time the storm tapers off around 9 p.m., said Lydia Jaja, a meteorologist in the Weldon Spring office.
But she had bad news for anyone hoping for outdoor fun. The snow is pretty dry, said Jaja.
“It’s probably not good snowball snow,” she said.

Drivers should stay home, she said, if possible. The Missouri Department of Transportation pretreated roads on Friday but warned motorists to use caution, especially on bridges and overpasses.
“Slow down for the condition, buckle up, and avoid distractions” such as cellphones, the department said in a statement.

By about 6 p.m. Saturday, the weather service estimated about 3 inches had fallen in the area.
Refreezing was expected overnight Saturday as temperatures plummet into the teens.
But the snow won’t last long. By midweek, temperatures are expected to return to normal for this time of year, with highs predicted to be in the upper 40s by Wednesday.
