Program of the year: 2021-22 small schools finalists

Girls track and field: Led by sophomore Aniyah Brown, the All-Metro athlete of the year, the Lions rolled to their second consecutive Class 5 team state championship. Brown’s undefeated season finished with two individual titles and two relay titles as the Lions won team honors by almost 40 points.

Football: Fought through demanding schedule to finish 7-7 after reaching the Class 3 semifinals, the program’s second consecutive final four appearance and its third in four seasons.

Boys basketball: Posted a 21-10 record and finished third in the Class 5 state tournament after winning titles in both 2020 and 2021. That experience paid off to emerge from the toughest district in the area.

Girls basketball: One of the area’s best teams wrapped a 20-6 season by falling 64-60 in Class 4 sectional to eventual state champ John Burroughs.

Girls basketball: Bombers won the first state championship in program history by beating St. Joseph Benton in a tightly contested Class 4 title game. It capped a 17-game winning streak and 23-4 season, culminating in Bombers’ first state tournament appearance since 2003.

Boys soccer: Metro League champ finished 18-7-1 and third in Class 4, the state’s highest classification, after falling to eventual champ Rockhurst 2-1 in the semifinals.

Baseball: Posted a 26-5 record in a season that ended with a 3-1 loss in the quarterfinals to eventual Class 3 state champion Southern Boone.

Girls volleyball: Won first district title since 2001, finished 23-4-5 after falling in quarterfinals to eventual Class 3 state champion Blair Oaks.

Also: Boys swimming and diving, third place in Class 1; boys basketball, 17-9 district finalist.

Football: Won the first state championship in program history by beating perennial power Lamar 33-27 in the Class 2 title game on a touchdown with six seconds left to play. Finished 12-2.

Boys soccer: Beat St. Pius X 3-0 in a Class 1 championship game featuring two first-time state finalists. The Cougars finished 22-5-1 by going 14-0-1 down the stretch to claim their first crown.

Boys track and field: Behind a standout group of distance runners, claimed Class 3 runner-up team finish, missing out on a championship by only three points.

Boys cross country: Behind individual champion Caleb Lind, the All-Metro cross country runner of the year, finished third in Class 4 team standings.

Girls volleyball: Reached Class 4 quarterfinals before falling to eventual state champ Westminster in a four-set match to cap 21-11-2 season.

Girls volleyball: Swept Logan-Rogersville in Class 4 state final for first state championship since 2012 and the second in program history. Metro League champs finished their 26-8 season on a 14-match win streak.

Girls track and field: With senior Brooke Moore leading the way by capturing three individual events, Wildcats won the Class 3 team championship by more than 30 points. It was the first state team title in program history.

Boys track and field: Like the girls, a first-team team state champion. Unlike the girls, the Wildcats claimed the Class 3 boys title by a mere three points. Success in field events was a key to the championship effort.

Boys basketball: Metro League champion went 26-2 and beat eventual state champs CBC and Vashon in regular season before falling by two points in a classic district final to Cardinal Ritter.

Also: Girls team tennis, Class 1 runner-up; boys golf, Class 4 fourth place; baseball, 18-15 Metro League champ.
