ST. LOUIS — Construction of the new $496 million Interstate 270 bridge over the Mississippi River has reached the halfway point and, weather permitting, eastbound drivers will begin using its newly-built southern span on Sunday.
The time of the switch has yet to be announced by Illinois and Missouri transportation officials. Plans call for westbound traffic to move to the new span next month.
Two lanes each of eastbound and westbound traffic will use the southern span while the new adjacent northern span is constructed over the next two years.
The project, jointly funded by Illinois and Missouri, links St. Louis to Madison County. The new bridge replaces the current I-270 Chain of Rocks Bridge which opened in 1966.
