New York Mets World Series Odds: Are Mets worth a bet following Juan Soto contract?

Ever the proverbial little brother in the New York baseball scene, the New York Mets have made the most impactful signing in the history of the franchise and of the baseball offseason thanks to Juan Soto's choosing of Queens over The Bronx. 

The Orange and Blue inked the superstar outfielder to an almost unfathomable 15-year, $765 million deal that includes a $75 million signing bonus. 

Given the addition of an elite player in his prime coming off a career-best homer total, where do the Mets stand in the World Series odds leaderboard, and how viable is a bet on Carlos Mendoza’s crew?

New York Mets 2024 World Series Odds (+900 or better)

The Mets forged an 89-73 record in Mendoza’s first season at the helm in 2024, following it up with an impressive postseason run during which they traversed the NLCS and NLDS by a combined 5-2 margin over the Brewers and Phillies before falling in the NLCS, 4-2, to the eventual World Series champion Dodgers.

Following Soto’s signing, Mets’ World Series winner odds immediately narrowed to between +700 and +900 after previously having been as long as +1700.

Many of the key components that got the Mets that far return in 2025. Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos are the two biggest incumbent cogs in the offensive machine. Adding Soto to that duo ratchets up expectations, but the scenario could get even rosier. 

Despite the sizable investment in Soto, president of baseball operations David Stearns confirmed the door is not closed on re-signing Pete Alonso, previously the team’s most fearsome bat and one that would undoubtedly benefit from Soto’s presence whether the latter hit ahead or behind him.

Talented backstop Francisco Alvarez, who just turned 23 and presumably has his best baseball ahead of him, could put it all together in 2025. Alvarez followed up an eye-catching 2023 rookie campaign where he slugged 25 homers in 123 games by boosting his average and on-base percentage, but also experiencing a power drain in the process (11 HR in 100 games). 

Veteran holdovers Jeff McNeil and Brandon Nimmo experienced atypical regression in their batting averages in 2024, but significant drops in BABIP for each suggests production much closer to their respective career bodies of work could be in the works this coming season.

Additionally, top prospect Luisangel Acuna could make an impact at the big-league level in 2025, following a solid full campaign of seasoning at Triple-A Syracuse and a noteworthy 14-game MLB cameo where he mustered a .308 average, .966 OPS, and six extra-base hits, including three homers, across 40 plate appearances.

On the pitching side of the equation, Luis Severino’s departure isn’t ideal but far from unsolvable. In fact, it can be argued New York already more than addressed his exit with the additions of the duo of Frankie Montas and Soto’s Yankees teammate Clay Holmes, the latter who’s projected to join the rotation. Meanwhile, one-time All-Star Paul Blackburn, who finished last season on the IL with a back injury, is on track to be ready for Opening Day. 

Should you bet on Mets World Series odds? 

The Braves and Dodgers are the only two teams on the World Series futures leaderboard with shorter odds than the Mets, who have even passed the Yankees, as mid-December approaches. A potential Alonso re-signing would result in the Mets almost certainly surpassing Atlanta, which appears set to lose Max Fried in free agency, as well.

The defending champion Dodgers will naturally be a significant obstacle for the Mets in terms of being able to emerge from the NL, but given the team assembled even if Alonso doesn’t return – and the fact odds will shorten further if he does – they’re certainly worth a World Series winner bet at the current price.
