JENNINGS — Police on Thursday identified the man who died in a Jennings house fire the day before.
Belma Johnson, 83, was found in his garage after his house caught fire in the 9200 block of Riverwood Drive. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The fire was reported just before 1 a.m. Wednesday, St. Louis County police said. When crews arrived, smoke was coming from the house and neighbors were trying to put the fire out with a garden hose, police said.
Police said officers tried to find the resident inside the home but could not get to him. Firefighters later found a man in the garage, police said.
Authorities have not said what caused the blaze. St. Louis Regional Bomb and Arson Unit detectives are investigating. That is protocol anytime someone dies in a fire.
